Hearing from families who have walked this journey is incredibly meaningful to us. These shared experiences reflect the care, dedication, and lasting changes myofunctional therapy can bring to everyday life.
I am writing regarding our experience with Joanne Nguyen, who provided therapy services for my son, who at the time was 11 years old. I highly recommend her services and expertise. Being my son’s dental hygienist, she was crucial in discovering anatomical and other issues affecting the overall oral health of my son. Which also affected sleep, affecting his daily living (attention in school due to fatigue, etc.) We had 12 sessions (in person, Zoom) and were provided home exercises which were extremely helpful to address my son’s mouth breathing, narrow palate. She was also available to answer any questions, provide information during treatment. Her patience and ability to have him participate was also outstanding. She continued to offer her expertise with other medical disciplines (ENT, orthodontist) so he received all the best possible care to address his specific needs. Presently, my son has so much improvement with sleep, diminished mouth breathing and successful orthodontic work, all initiated by Joanne. We are so grateful to have had her services. Her knowledge base is more than exceptional.
Joanne at Heart Myofunctional Therapy has transformed our lives! We were seeking help for my son, who was constantly tongue thrusting. She did an extensive evaluation. We learned he was tongue-tied. Joanne suggested therapy and a tongue-tie release. We are 5 months into our therapy and close to completion. My son is more confident, less anxious, and sleeping through the night. He is learning how to properly seal his mouth and swallow. He has learned how to rest and use his tongue properly. Joanne is knowledgeable, understanding, and patient. I learned so much from her with regard to mouth functioning. I would recommend her to any family that is in need of myofunctional services.
Joanne was wonderful with our son, who was 19 years old at the time. He has mild autism and had previously feeding therapy. That is where we found out his limitations with his tongue (movement, poor control, and sensory issues). We started noticing he would have a lot of buildup on his bottom teeth that was due to him sleeping with his mouth open and being a mouth breather (instead of a nose breather). Many of the exercises required looking at the mirror in order to make sure the exercise was being done correctly. She was so patient with him and found ways to help him with his dislike of mirrors. We've been so happy to see our son's progress and improvements with therapy. He no longer sleeps with his mouth open so there is less scraping off the buildup on his teeth which makes dentist visits a little easier. He is now consistently breathing through his nose which is better for overall health, including jaw structure. We highly recommend Joanne as an amazing therapist!
Working with Joanne has been a life changing experience. I have learned so much in the past several weeks from working with Joanne that I am surprised I didn’t already know at my age. It’s something that everyone should know, learn, and practice. She has taught me basic life skills that I didn’t even know were supposed to be natural. I have strengthened the muscles in my mouth/tongue and learned how to eat correctly, which I didn’t even know I was doing incorrectly. Thanks to Joanne I am learning and correcting the function of my tongue and face, which has so many positive effects.
Both my daughter and I have gone through therapy and a tongue tie release with Joanne and have had a wonderful experience. I was experiencing morning headaches and neck and shoulder tension, both of which have significantly improved from the time I started therapy. I’ve even seen a positive change in my posture. Joanne is not only very knowledgeable and thorough, but she is so kind and encouraging along the way. I’m so thankful to have found Joanne and I would highly recommend her to anyone needing myofunctional therapy
My 7 year old daughter and I worked with Joanne for almost 8 months in hopes of guiding her to a healthier natural facial posture. My daughter was a consistent mouth breather and snored regularly. This concerned me as I know the short and long term potential health ramifications of mouth breathing. Joanne met with us and gave us a detailed analysis of what she does, gave us a report and plan of action on how to address this issue. We had simple exercises to do morning and evening to help train her tongue to be on the roof of her mouth during rest. My daughter was very challenging to deal with as she routinely did not want to participate. Looking back, I am very glad I went through this process. My daughter has made good progress and the challenges over those months were well worth it for the current & future benefit. Joanne is super well informed, had clear answers for all questions, was very good about being responsive to communications, worked with us when we wanted to pivot on some occasions and was overall great with my daughter as she is also a caring mom of 2 younger children. Joanne is passionate about what she does, has significant knowledge, experience and a track record of success. It was always a pleasure meeting with her and she even does zoom or remote meetings to fit the busy parents schedule.
Joanne Nguyen is a great Myofunctional therapist! She is very professional and explains all steps of the therapy process with great detail and care. Joanne helped my son to improve his facial muscular strength, posture and teeth grinding at night. I would definitely recommend her to others.
My 7 year old son and I both saw Joanne at Heart Myofunctional Therapy this past year to assist in correcting our tongue ties. My 7 year old was not sleeping through the night and I was dealing with neck tension. Joanne was patient with us, very informative, made this process as simple as possible, and stayed with us the whole way. My son started sleeping through the night just a week after his release (and it continues now 6 months later) and my neck tension released immediately. Have already recommended Joanne to friends and will continue to do so!
Joanne has been amazing to work with! I reached out to her when I was not getting the answers that I wanted for my son & daughter's mouth breathing. She has taught me and my kids so much about tongue positioning, keeping their mouths closed, and breathing through their noses. She has helped to guide us with expansion and braces for my kids and has referred us to dentists and orthodontists who are knowledgeable with airway function. Joanne has been so patient with us and has been so wonderful working with my kids, who look forward to all of our meetings with her.
I was referred to Joanne by a holistic dentist I had just started seeing, for help with my recently diagnosed tongue tie. Working through Joanne's myofunctional therapy program was educational and eye opening in so many ways. She not only directly helped me understand the effects of my condition and provided a thorough remediation program of exercises over many months, but also referred me to several other practitioners who complimented and added to the success of my progress with her. She and I have similar views on so many aspects of overall health, and her knowledge and experience opened up a whole new avenue of learning and awareness for me. At our last session she provided a great recap with photos to show how much I had progressed. I highly recommend Joanne to anyone seeking a myofunctional therapist!
I want to start off by saying what a wonderful therapist Joanne is! I met Joanne at my dentist who also specializes in sleep disorders. After dealing with years of issues with my teeth I was also starting to wake up in the middle of the night choking and with a super dry mouth.
When I met Joanne and told her my concerns and she told me I had tongue tie. Although I knew I had been diagnosed with a tongue tie when I was a baby, my pediatrician said it wouldn’t be a problem for me and I never had it fixed. Joanne explained to me that my issues could’ve very well been because of my tongue tie.
The choking at night was because my tongue was not in the proper position when I was sleeping and it was falling back and blocking my airway. I was waking up choking and gasping for air as a result. I also had problems swallowing my food and water and that would also cause me to choke. There were some other issues I was having that were related such as debilitating neck and upper back pain, that felt like I had whiplash from a car accident but it was continuous and massage and acupuncture didn’t help. I also had anxiety that would not go away and this is related to the improper tongue position in relation to the vagus nerve.
I now had a whole new understanding of what happens when a tongue tie isn’t fixed as a child and what it could do to an adult years later and why I was having these issues. Joanne explained to me that she was a myofunctional therapist. Myofunctional therapy is the therapy that takes place before and after the tongue tie surgery to 1. make sure the tie doesn’t reattach, 2. make sure the patient is breathing, chewing and swallowing properly 3. make sure the tongue posture is correct working up to the surgery and continues to be in the correct posture afterward 4. to make sure the tongue has proper tone and strength in its new position. There might be a few more that I’m missing! Its not just about the tongue posture, the posture of the shoulders and back and directly connected as well!
Work with Joanne was very straight forward! She gave me a clear understanding of what the process would be and how long it would take. I looked forward to our meetings because I knew I was going to learn and could see the progress in real time. Just as any sort of therapy, it can be challenging however Joanne was there for me every step of the way and when I struggled she provided extra help for me to get past each hurdle. We met once a week on zoom or sometimes in person for approximately 9 months. 6 months pre-surgery and 3 months after the tongue tie surgery. Although I did have a successful tongue tie surgery and I felt a huge difference even after the actual incision was made, the biggest difference was from when I started my Myofunctional therapy with Joanne to right before the surgery. I am still very happy that I did the surgery, but the surgery alone would’ve done no good without my work with Joanne. The two BIGGEST differences I had was the neck pain went away COMPLETELY and no more choking at night. It was night and day difference which started getting better within weeks of starting therapy. After the surgery, I felt my shoulders drop an inch down and back! And now I have way better shoulder and neck posture.
I am now almost 2 years post surgery and my work with Joanne and am still benefiting from my results. I sleep soundly, I have no back or neck pain, my anxiety is non existent, I have no issues swallowing or chewing my food.
I wish I could tell the world how important it is to have a tongue tie fixed as a baby and not wait like I did as an adult. I honestly don’t know where I would be right now if I hadn’t found Joanne and I hope by writing this review it might help others find the answers they’re looking for, like I did when I found her. She was a pleasure to work with and she really explained the whole process, which really made it a great experience. I highly recommend Joanne!
